What you should know about Medical Interview Training

Medicine in Waverley

We are a newly formed Sydney-based company aimed at providing professional, genuine assistance to doctors and medical students looking to further their career prospects. Our doctors know first-hand the rigours of medical training, and the additional stress and uncertainty that comes with choosing and gaining an advanced training position in your chosen career.

All our doctors are hand-picked experienced senior clinicians who have trained in Australia, and know the inner workings of the system. They have personally been successful in many medical interview situations, obtaining positions in some of the most sought-after specialities and hospitals. They have decided to make time during their busy schedules to help you, the next generation of clinicians!

Let us utilise our experience, knowledge and personal insights into the medical training system to help guide you towards your desired career ambitions. We know from personal experience the frustration of being given medical interview coaching or career advice by non-medical “life coaches”. These individuals tend to offer their services to a vast range of professionals, without fully understanding the specific needs of medical professionals.
Medical Interview Training and Medical Career Development –
run exclusively BY DOCTORS, FOR DOCTORS

Why Us?

Medical Interview Training employs only senior experienced clinicians who are passionate about helping the next generation achieve their ambitions. Our doctors have all personally gone through the stressful selection process of working their way up the medical hierarchy. At MIT, we are continually surprised that after years of study and hard work, many junior doctors don't prepare adequately for their potentially career changing interviews.
We feel that it is disappointing that the main place until now for doctors applying for interview training are run by so-called “career consultants” or marketing personnel. Almost always, they offer services to clients in fields as diverse as finance, marketing, law, advertising and medicine. Some claim to have a “level of clinical knowledge” just by spending time with doctors!
As every doctor knows, medicine is a very specialised and unique field. We deal with patients, not clients or customers. We are trained to think, analyse and behave in a certain analytical manner. At Medical Interview Training, we believe that interview panels can see through candidates who have been coached by those outside the field of medicine, or have not prepared sufficiently themselves.
Medical Interview Training has been established and designed exclusively for the medical community. We want to help those in a position we found ourselves in earlier in our careers. As our slogan says, “By doctors, for doctors.”We have limited classes and group sizes to ensure high standards and maximum benefits.
Our interview training sessions include discussion on various hot topics that candidates are expected to fully understand and be able to discuss during their interview. These include topics such as:
  • Advertising in medicine
  • Audit
  • Clinical governance
  • Consent
  • Critical incident reporting
  • Dealing with an impaired colleague
  • Infection control
  • Medical workforce issues
  • Rural Health
  • Safe work hours

Medical Interview Training

Introduction

After years and years of study and hard work, it continues to surprise how many junior doctors under-estimate the importance of adequate preparation for their medical interviews. The right practice and preparation is crucial. It can mean the difference between progressing a step closer to your dream career, compared to missing out and starting back at square one!
We understand that all job interviews are stressful, especially when your future career may be at stake. Our program is designed to improve your confidence and maximise your chances.
Our experienced practicing clinicians have gathered their combined experiences to give you the best possible preparation. They have all personally successfully passed through many stressful medical interview situations. These have included obtaining positions in highly competitive advanced training specialities, succeeding in achieving sought-after fellowships at internationally acclaimed hospitals, and securing consultant positions at some of Sydney's best public and private hospitals. They have taken time away from their busy clinical schedules to pass on their tips and strategies for success directly to you. Don't miss this opportunity.

Medical Career Planning

With the rapid expansion in the number of medical schools and domestic medical students graduating in Australia in recent years, the competition for advanced speciality training in all fields of medicine is growing at an unprecedented rate. This phenomenon has been referred to as a “medical student tsunami". Professor Lesleyanne Hawthorne, a senior medical  researcher from the University of Melbourne, was quoted in 2012 as describing the situation as follows:
“We’ve built 10 new medical schools in the past decade. What that means is there has been an enormous increase in domestic students studying medicine.....in NSW, where the largest number of medical schools has opened, is literally doubling the number of domestic students graduating within the current one-year period. It’s been referred to by some as the ‘tsunami’ of domestic graduates”
The medical workforce issues in Australia extend deeper than a shortage of intern places for new graduates. While the number of medical graduates has risen dramatically, the number of training positions in almost all medical specialities, including general practice, has not increased significantly during this time. This will almost certainly result in the competition for these positions being at levels never seen previously. In 2013 Benjamin Veness, the President of the Australian Medical Students' Association (AMSA) wrote:

About us

Medical Interview Training is a company run solely by experienced senior doctors and is designed exclusively for doctors and future doctors.

There is no doubt that competition for positions in specialist training programs is becoming increasingly intense. There are an increasing number of medical graduates each year in New South Wales and Australia. New medical schools are opening with seeming regularity. Despite this, the number of training positions offered by the specialist medical Colleges have not reflected this increase in demand.
With an increase in demand and only a limited supply, competition for training positions is increasing at a rapid rate. Medical graduates who are unable to secure a position on a specialist or general practitioner training program face significantly uncertainty.
Our philosophy at Medical Interview Training is don’t settle for second-best. Choose whichever specialty suits your personality and interests, and give it your best attempt. With the right preparation, attitude and confidence, every specialty and career is achievable.
At Medical Interview Training, we understand from personal experience the stress doctors feel when they haven’t yet secured a training position. It is hard to plan your life when you don’t know where you will be working or even how long it will take before you get a position. It is equally stressful on relationships, partners and loved ones. Financially and emotionally another year of unaccredited training or research can come at a heavy price.
We aim to help you through the difficult selection process and help you achieve your ambitions as quickly as possible.
